I have an MBA and have had no luck finding employment. Any suggestions?

I earned my MBA in 2004 and have been turned down for job after job. I worked as a Realtor while in grad school and have not had a single offer/reply for any resume or application. The only negative I can think of is less than stellar credit but it is from many years ago (5 to 6). Are there any job ideas/suggestions? Since graduation I have only found manual labor jobs. I'm not above such jobs, but I'd like to find something where I can use my mind instead of my back. I would like to find employment in this region (Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Florida) if possible.

If the MBA isn't opening doors, maybe try something in sales for a while. Your MBA should give you a good understanding of the dynamics behind the products, and let you apply those to being better aligned with the company's marketing strategies. That in turn would help you add more value to the company, and so potentially move into other positions where you could more directly use your MBA.

You May not like to hear this. However it is meant well. I interview people for many jobs as part of a team here in the UK. We turn down many grads. and largely we are in the same field of Art and Design. Straight forward B.A we take nothing for interview with less than 2.1. With MBA never taken one person at all. In industry at that point, you have become to academic and then it is by word of mouth.

I understand your point in recouping your money invested in this area. I can not coment on the States. Here in the UK it has to be very hands on in the qualification for the Company to make that investment, which here is over £30,000 p.a

Sadly we have taken B.A at £15.000 and quite understand your point on Building Sites, as is the same money. I think this is an International problem as so many get these and rate from 1.00 to minus 3.5 and forget it at the lower scale, to many chasers. The same is for media and Law. If you have not a first class in both then you have to hawk your self around till you get a name.

It is painfull, but sadly true. we have lawyers that have 2.2 and just sit earning a small salary, sat in an office. The same for Academics they get stuck and can not get money for research. Using your back is no good as like me my hands are very soft and brain tarnished, latterly I have had to go back carry on. Here we have QAA which is Quality assurance Assured and change the goal posts. I applied for a job and even with the qualifications I had not got the QAA.

Just start and work up. Kepp a strong mind and try not to loose the issues of what you have learnt. Also it is not personal at all.

Every employer largely even though they will not admit it, want excellence at a reduced cost on the P & L and Balance sheet. Good luck

I know, in Silicon Valley, an MBA is great to have on your resume. There are plenty of jobs out there and the job market has gotten a little better in the San Francisco Bay Area. I know you mention you'd like to stay in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Florida. However, MBA's are desired here. Check out http://www.craigslist.org/

Out of all the states you listed, Atlanta is going to be the best bet. Move there, hire an image consultant to correct what obviously is a problem. Research what makes a great resume. Get help with interview skills. Then, when ready, start calling prospective employers, after researching the companies. If as an African American, you can't land a job in the "black Mecca" of America, after all that help, you are lost.

Don't give up. Put out more resumes. Go online & fill out apps. Ask all your friends, family, neighbors. Keep putting the word out. Look for jobs in your field of interest that are lower positions than what you're looking for & then work your way up to it. Sometimes it's easier to find a job after you have one.

Your problem is where you are looking. If you really want to use that MBA you need to go to the major cities in the USA. Got to try NY, Chicago, LA, etc. Those areas don't have the businesses that require MBAs as much as major cities where the bigger financial and service companies are located.

Quit your manual labor job. Use your brain instead. You can get a marketing job, or maybe back to be an agent, or just start your own business.

Buy and read the book "Rich Dad Poor Dad" by Mr. Robert Kiyosaki.

It will be a real eye-opener for you!

The key to getting really rich, is to become more unemployable, rather than more employable.

    "Mind your own business."
