Buy an old Toyota You should be able to find one from the mid 80's in good shape very cheap.

They are cheap to maintain and will out live most of their owners with the tiniest TLC.

I had a Corolla that had 117,000 miles on when I got it I put another 200,000 on it and the guy I sold it to is still commuting to work in 500,000 miles + now he says the 3Tc 2 litre engine still ticking over like a Swiss watch and still gets 35mpg everyday.

Right now I have an 87 Toyota van.

I have had more cars them most people have had hot dinners and the best car I ever owned was that corolla, for cheap reliable transport.

rear wheel drive so even replacing the clutch is easy.

Part are cheap and easy to find.

If you have long distances to travel a peppy little turbo diesel will be your best bet like an old VW rabbit 45mpg and can still be quite zippy.

I keep a data base of 1600 cars from over 40 years if you want to consult me please feel free thousands do every year and advice is always free.

Subarus are good cars and all 4 wheel drive, decent gas mileage, 25mpg or so, I have 2 now, both legacys, legacys are their highest priced, then foresters then imprezas, try and get a legacy or forester, look for the one with the lowest mileage and price you can afford, do a carfax and have a knowlegable/trustworthy mechanic give it a once over, insist on new tires if they look bad (dealer) you can't go wrong (unless you are extremely unlucky). Toyotas are good too, I really only know Subarus though. In my area there are mechanics that specialize in only Subarus, look for one, never go to a new car dealer for service unless money is no object and you have AAA

what is relatively cheap? $100? $1000? $2500. You can get a used car for any price...the question is will you pay more in repairs than you did to buy the car.....

what do you consider cheap, a few hundred or a few thousand. I have a 2000 mercury mystique and I am asking $3,500 for it, but since you would have to travel I would sell it to you for 3,200. if you are interested you can email me at jovosasic@sbcglobal.net
