To give a sympathy card or not?
I just started working for this woman 3 weeks ago, and now she is out of state because her son is in a coma. I am taking care of all the business while she is gone. When she comes back, is a sympathy card appropriate if her son does not wake up? Will it seem like I am sucking up to her?

If her son passes away, she will probably appreciate any expression of sympathy.
Losing a child is the most heartbreaking thing that can happen to a person, they say. Any small comfort you can give will make her feel better.
Don't worry about work - just do something, not nothing. She will feel better and so will you. You are both only human.
It might be a little odd if you don't do anything.
Good luck.

A genuine expression of concern is never regarded as sucking up. It doesn't matter that you have only known her for a short time. She is in crisis right now, and needs all the support she can get. If her son remains in coma, there are cards that say things like, "I understand the stress you are under." or "I hope things will get better" as opposed to a card of sympathy that talks about bereavement. Of course, if her son dies, a card of sympathy is perfectly appropriate. To avoid the appearance of 'sucking up', if that seems to be a concern, why not invite your co-workers to chip in with you for a bouquet and a card signed by all of you?
Follow your heart. It's usually a pretty good guide.

Maybe a card saying Get Well or My Prayers are With You. A sympathy card is for people who have had a loved one die. If he isn't dead, I think it would be inappropriate. She is probably really devastated about her son, and any kind words of support you can give her in a card would probably be greatly accepted. It just shows what type of person you are and employers and employees give gifts and cards in the office all the time.

Give her a card letting her know that you hope her son gets better, and a live plant . A "Sympathy" card is usually given to the family of one who is already dead. There is still hope with him, a sympathy card might make her mad.

I would send a care and concern card or thinking of you, a sympathy card means some one who has died to me and if she is very very sensitive she might take it the wrong way

A card let her know that you cares and to show some kind of incourgement that her son will wake back up. Maybe a special prayer.

Compassion is never "sucking up". Why wait? Send her a Thinking of You card now. It will help boost her spirits.

Giving her a card will show you are thinking of her and the situation. Just be genuine in your comments.
