Here will be my version to interpret and extend your verse:

When I Asked God for strength

He Gave Me Difficult Situations to Face

    - So that I can recognize the strengths already I have and I can stand with confidence and fight with difficulties because for sure at the end of the day he will help those who help themselves.

When I Asked God for Brain & Brawn

He Gave Me Puzzles in Life to Solve

    - ...so that I can have realization of infinite intellectual and mental powers I have got that I could only get access to by solving more and more puzzles and evolving through self-efforts.

When I Asked God for Happiness

He Showed Me Some Unhappy People

    - ..so that I can come out from my circle of "selfishness" and help for the greater good of humanity and also to realize that I have to earn my happiness and not beg for it.

When I Asked God for Wealth

He Showed Me How to Work Hard

    - ..so that I can realize that I get what I and my Karma deserve. There is no free lunch in this world. Every bread has to be earned by hard work only and not by deaming for it.

When I Asked God for Favors

He Showed Me Opportunities to Work Hard

    - ...so that I can correct myself to not expect things that I don't deserve or that I have not earned by my own efforts and then I can improve myself to get rid of unreasonable desires that make be beg those favors. Till I have these two hands and my life, I can work hard and earn without having to beg, doesn't matter if its god that I'm begging to.

When I Asked God for Peace

He Showed Me How to Help Others

    - ..so that I understand that its none other than you and me who have to create the peace and it has to start with me first. Root case of not having the peace is with us only and we are the ones who have to solve it. I can help others to get more happiness in this world and that will lead to more love for eachother and peace.

God Gave Me Nothing I Wanted

He Gave Me Everything I Needed

    - ..that's his way to showing that he cares and that he want his children to earn their way in this world out of their efforts and not by someone's favor which will be a life without self-respect. At the end of the day, root cause of most unhappiness and pain is this "want". No wonder god didn't listen to me..;-)

Everything that was asked for in this prayer/brayer/poem are things that would happen over the course of life...to a point.

Learning to work hard, finding opportunities to do so, and helping others are all things learned by example...parents, friends, etc.

"God answers our prayers in the way He sees fit, this is to say that it is not always the way we thought it should be, but if our hearts are right with God we will see the blessing in the circumstance anyway. PEACE "

I think its amazing ans shows us how much God provides for us and how little actually understand. I think its amazing and humbling and I think its a good example of Matthew 6

25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?

28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

thanks a lot. i had this with me always in my purse. but somehow i lost it.& didnot know where to search for it. as for my comments this is one of the best sayings of swamiji. which will open our eyes. we pray to god to give many things. but when he gives us we won't even realise it. how will you know your strength unless u r in difficult situation ? he gives or creates those situations to make us strong. but we blame him for it. the same with other couplets also. i keep this with me to remind that whatever happens it happens for our good. we should learn from all the situations we face. each & every situation we face teaches us something & makes us a better person. so,we should not blame god for the difficulties which we face. we should ask him to give us strength to face it & solve the problem.thanx once again.

Since you are not intelligent, you need someone, or some thing to tell you, that these things you mentioned. Everyone, religious or not, SHOULD know these things, already. Why could'nt you figure these things out on your own? I'm not religious at all, and I do these things very well, all the time. Your question implies that only religious people do these things you mentioned. That's just extremely silly.

you reside a meaning much less existence till you hit upon the purpose of your existence, . look deep interior you, recognise what's your existence's purpose and your meaning of existence. Then the international you reside in is unquestionably not the comparable because of the fact the probabilities existence throws at you're significant and the meaning of existence will make it clean what you like from existence.

It depends on how you see things in life, would you see pain as a blessing or torture?

    God is mighty good!!
