The reason it varies so much is because the due date is taken from your first day of your last period not the moment of conception. There is no real way of knowing when you would have conceived unless you were using fertility treatments or taking ovulation tests. Usually it is 14 days after your period. So it could be assumed that a baby born close to it's due date only really spent 38 weeks in the womb.
