Be more organized. I find myself waiting until the last minute to gather the needed materials and fit the final pieces together. The times I am more organized everyhing goes smoothly as far as my presentation and the students enjoy the lessons more. (This is more anytime..not neccessarily the beginning of the year)

Be firm and lay down the rules. Then when the students test those rules..show that you are the type of teacher that requires everyone to follow them. It sets the tone for the entire year as long as you stick with it and can make or break a class/schoolyear. Then during late spring you can ease up a bit and then they will really enjoy themselves. Remember..once a class goes downhill behaviorwise, it is IMPOSSIBLE to right the ship. AS the other answerer stated..organization is key for yourself, and the students. It keeps you from that last minute rush to get everything done. Try to be prepared a week out.

Firmness and making students aware that you believe in their ability to do good work. No negative feelings!
And, most of all, treating all students the same.
And, yes I have tried it. It makes a big difference if the students know that you believe they can do the work and do it well.
