What could this rash be a sign of?

My 18 month old has been pooping 5-6 times a day (not diarrhea just solid poop) even waking up at night to do it. She now has a horrible rash even though I change her frequently. Could she have developed some kind of allergey? How many times is normal for a child this old?

Update:

She is not costipated just formed stools.

It's a bad diaper rash.

My 22 month old poops quite frequently also because he is a big eater. He is very prone to diaper rash. Make sure you bathe her every night and let her run naked for a bit to let her bum get some air. Also, try Neosporin once or twice a day to help kill the bacteria that may be on her bum. I do this with mine now and he's been rash free for a few weeks. If this doesn't help though, take her to the doctor. Mine had a rash for about three weeks that I thought was from heat and frequent bowel movements and it turned out to be a yeast infection from bacteria. They gave me a prescription and it went right away. Also, the doctor suggested that if it starts to get a little red again, to mix 1 tube of diaper rash medicine with 1 tube of hydrocortisone cream and use that 2-3 times per day. Anyway, good luck...hope she feels better.

It's not unusual for someone to have multiple bowel movements every day, but if what's happening is different from normal, look at how her diet has changed. Is she eating a high amount of whole grains, vegetables and other high-fiber foods? Has something new been added to her diet? Stool can cause quite a rash, especially if it's a little acidic (look at acidic fruits and vegies, like tomatoes or citrus fruit), even if you change her quickly.

If she's not straining, but passing stool comfortably, and otherwise seems healthy, I'd suggest trying changing up her diet a little and keeping a diet diary of what she's eaten and if there's any changes in her bowel movements. Slather on a diaper cream that is really durable every time you change her, and if you can, let her bottom get a little fresh air to dry the rash when you change her (after cleansing and before the cream). Let us know what happens!

Have you changed your laundry detergent? Have you been putting new clothes on her without being washed? Have you started her on a new food? Has she been drinking a lot of juice, especially citrus juice? Have you introduced a new food into her diet?

Weirdly, it could even be teething problems!

It could just be a heat rash, but the excessive bowel movements don't seem to go with that.

She could have the rash because of the amount of times she's soiled her diaper, but you can't let her go without the diaper if she's pooping that much.

Wash the area when you change her diaper, pat it dry and then apply A & D or Desitin. Give the pediatrician a call and see what he/she has to say.

That really seems like a lot my kids only went twice a day tops. As for treating the rash make sure you let her bum get dry after you wipe maybe leave her without a diaper for a few minutes. Use a really thick diaper rash cream. Try not to use any soap on her bum and try using unscented wipes you may even want to try switching diaper brands. Other than that maybe a change in diet?

Put some desitin or some other diaper rash cream with every change...chanes are that its just the moisture from frequent pooping that caused the rash. If it gets worse take her to the doctor.

FYI, they can poop up to 5 times a day without cause for alarm...

You have not clariffied where the rash is.Solid poop, you mean is she constipating? If she's costipating then she'll obviously have rash around her anus and also pass stools many times coz of tummy upset and also because of the fear of pain stopping her clear her bowels.. Try giving her carminatives, to help digestion and clear bowels too.Secondly if the rash is because of constipation then apply some cold cream/ healing ointment like soframycin, betatidine. You should give her some mild laxatives once a fortnight to avoid any bowel problems. I wish I could be of better help to you but many things are not clear.a) form of rash, b) place of rash c)how hard are her stools. Any ways, take care!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even tho you are changing her right away having poop come in contact 5 - 6 times a day can still irritate her butt. Try to figure out what is making her poop so much. Has she just started eating a lot of tanle foods? Usually this makes them poop more often at first. Hopefully it's just a phase that will work itself out. Try letting her run around as much as you can with out a diaper to help her butt.

It soumds like simple diaper rash which is cause by sitting in a wet diaper or by sweat. Get some ointment...I'm old school and have always like Desitin....keep the baby changed and dry and see if it clears up in a week. If not, or if it starts to ooze, puss or blister badly then set up an appointment with the doctor. Take care and I hope you have an amazing day!

I would call your doc. That being said I think that the rash is irration for pooping soo much! Also does she have her teeth in, my baby gets a red rash and many stools when hes teething, all the extra acid from teething gets him going.

My child also goes more when i give him stuff like beans or any fiberous food, by any chance did she eat alot of fiber recently??

your child could just be very regular and it could be nothing, so call the doc just to be sure!

It may be from changing her so much and she could have dry skin or irritation from that alone. Try to put some form of moisture lock ( diaper rash medicine) on her bottom every to every other diaper changing. I'm sure she appreciate it :) good luck
