Computer not recognizing connected outside hard drive?

Ok, so heres the deal. I'm attempting to copy all word, pic and mp3 files from my old laptop onto an external hardrive, then I'll move transfer them from the hardrive onto my new laptop. The problem is that my computer is not recognizing the hardrive. When I got to My Computer and look up all recognized drive, the only two that come up are C and D (my cd/dvd drive) why is this happening, what can I do to fix the problem. Detailed answers only please, I'm not too great wit computers. Thanks!

check the brand of your external hdd and download the required drivers. install the drivers and reboot. then plug in the external hdd. windows xp should be able to detect automatically your usb device.

it may be possible also that your external device is faulty. please use a flash usb drive to check if the usb ports are working fine.

I assume your external HDD has USB connector. Please ensure you have installed all the required drivers for it to be recognized. Other possible problem area could be your USB port in your old laptop. All the best!
