Do you think that China's "Artificial Sun Experiment" is the beginning of the end of the OIL era?

OK, I did a quick search, and couldn't find any serious articles with this as a title. From the vague descriptions, though, it sounds like they have gotten around to working on fusion. This is not exactly news. Scientists and engineers in the US, the former Soviet Union, and parts of Europe have been trying to find a way to harness this for a LONG time. 'Artificial Suns' ( i.e. " the way the sun makes energy" ) have already been created. Some lasted for nearly a second, last I had read up on it. If the Chinese have 'gathered' up all the research from the countries they have been 'studying' it under ( some places like to call it spying. Other places, you just rent a couple of nights in the Lincoln Bedroom, and they give it to you free...) and have been studying it intently, they may be able to catch up to the rest of the world. And if they should think of something that hasn't been tried, and get it to work, more power to them. But that wouldn't be the end of the world ( well, maybe " as we know it", but that hasn't been such a great deal, lately....) it would be the beginning. The country that masters a way to harness fusion for safe energy generation will be the next real superpower. Because, in the long run, it's economic power that counts for more than military power.

No. The end of the oil era will come when we run out of money. Sometime this fall.

There will be plenty of oil left, but the economics will collapse and people will realize that the only thing that kept so much and so many busy was cheap oil and wasting it.

The Artificial Sun experiment, even if successful, won't be soon enough.

It might even work, but it won't be a very efficient way to replace oil until it can be put under the hood of a car.

It would be cool if so. But they're playing with fire *chuckle snort*

I'm curious if they'll be able to create a self-sustaining reaction like the sun or if they'll have to keep feeding it.
