Windows XP Home vs. Windows XP Professional?

Is there a way to overwrite pre-installed Windows XP Home SP2 with Windows XP Professional without having to reformat the whole thing? I just bought a new laptop that came with XP Home but when I try to overwrite with my OEM XP Professional (bare bones) CD I get a message that says...can't do...the existing version (Home w/ updates) is newer than the one I'm trying to install (Professional OEM.)

For example, will it work if I uninstall the XP Home updates?

I'm trying to avoid having to reload all of the drivers and packaged software that came pre-installed on the thing

You need the full retail version of XP Pro or XP Pro Upgrade edition. The OEM version can only do a new install.
