Is watering grass in the evening or at night ineffective or harmful in any way?
I can't water it early in the morning because i have to leave for work really early. We just bought this house and people before us did not take the best care of the lawn. In a few places grass is either thin or excessively dry. Is there anything i can apply to the grass to make it less dry now, in the middle of hot summer? In case it matters, we live in New Jersey.

WAtering late at night can cause fungal diseases and other nasty stuff that can kill your grass as well as any plants you do it to. Best to water early evening if you can't do it in the morning but make it so it can dry out before nightfall and you should be fine. If you can do it in the morning even for 30 minutes or so a couple of times a week so you get at least an inch per week, it would be better but if not, try to do it early enough that it can dry out some before night.

I have heard conflicting info on this one.
But if you live in an area where it is very hot and still very warm at night I would water at night. After the sun is out watering can boil the roots. Night watering will allow the water to be absorbed at a nice temp and allow the water to go deeper for linger roots.

In fact, the evening, is best time to water all your plants and grass. There are heaps of reasons why.
You may be able to buy "Crystals" that absorb, then slowly release water. We use this in Australia for really dry areas. Ask at your garden centre.

Yes, the water left on the blades of grass and plants in the garden attracts slugs which destroy the greenery.
Can you put a timer on the hose connector so you can water the lawn in the moning?

is best to water late in the evening, less evaporation, keep lawn slightly longer in drought times, get pair of old spiked golf shoes an walk over the whole lawn, helps airiate it. feed the lawn an top dress it in mid autumn, scarify it springtime, raking out all dead moss, be firm with it, makes lawn loOK messy for a few weeks but will be happier for it as moss chokes the new growth ok, good luck

Lawns need an inch of water a week to stay healthy. There shouldn't be any problem with watering in the evening. I usually water mine at 6pm.

Watering at night is more effective because the water doesn't evaporate like it would in the hot midday sun.

our gardener says that if it is too early in the evening the grass will stay too wet all night and rot or something.
