How do I find a server's platform via LAN?

I need to know if a remote box is running Linux or Windows or whatever platform it is. How can I do this? I'm running Windows NT. The box is mapped as a drive on my computer.

Go to Windows Explorer, browse the network neighborhood, locate the box, right click and choose properties. :)

You mentioned using Windows NT, if you're able, find (or build) a machine running Linux, and download p0f. p0f is a passive Operating System scanner, and can provide you small network information, and information on what OS that network is running.
