Why isn't Santa Claus black? Why don't they show pictures of a black Santa Claus?

The only black Santa I ever saw was on wrapping paper.

Update:

CHRISTMAS IS RACIST!

Santa Claus is depicted as white - including light colored eyes generally - because he is the evolution of a several age-old Northern European traditions. Many of them are germanic (german) in origin, although not all are. The northern europeans had simply never met (most of the time) a black. Way back in history the degree of travel required for such things was just unheard of. Had santa been an african tradition, he most certainly would have been black. However, then again, its unlikely he'd have spent as much time in that thick winter wardrobe either! (The northern european countries are quite cold in the winters.) As the northern europeans migrated - taking christianity with them - so too did the older folk traditions. Thus, santa has become, over time, a world-wide phenomena.

Because Santa Claus is a German tradition from a time when the nearest black man was still in Africa. There simply were no black Germans when the Christmas traditions were being adopted by the Anglo-German Europeans who brought it to the USA.

Santa as we know him was described in Dickens' Christmas Carol. Dickens happened to live in London where the population at the time was one hundred percent white.

It would have been real strange if he made Santa black, or any other color.

I'm sure that if you would write a Christmas story on the level of Christmas Carol, and described Santa as being black, no one would object.

Because Santa Claus is a white invention.

Since Santa is a folk tradition I think it'd be nice if he could evolve and be Asian, Black, Hispanic, and anything else, so that children can feel included, and they wouldn't feel left out. So I say yes Santa can be black or any other race.

First off Santa is German , Santa is not in the Bible. therefore has no meaning to Christmas which is when we celebrate the birth of Jesus who was of Jewish ancestry, the santa clauss is a money making machine, I think you are better of with the three kings or magis, as THEY are in the Bible, and they represent all three major races , so a black child can wish for the black king to bring him gifts, the white child has the white king and the Hispanics , Orientas can idetify with the brown Oriental king, althought in Puertorico we had them all, and loved them equally.
