Does anyone actually read the "comments"?
Why have them if no one reads them?

Personally, I don't read them. Of course, as far as I can tell, no one has left comments on my questions, so there wouldn't be any point. I think the comments are there for petty people who simply must have the last word. (I admit, I do this sometimes.) People can leave comments to gripe about how they're answer was better than the "best" one that was chosen. And since no one reads them, it's pretty harmless. But who knows? Maybe there are some people who read all the comments they receive. I suppose it's possible that a person could add valuable information that expands upon the best answer, but it seems unlikely, given the quality of life on Y!A.

If I ever come across a question with comments, I always read them. A lot of the time it's extra information that's even more interesting than what was provided in the best answer. If there's anything else I can add, I'll usually write a comment of my own. They're especially good for short follow-up questions by the asker, but comments also help clarify the answer for anyone who finds the question later via search.
