my pigeon laid an egg!?
im not sure what to do at this point. she laid an egg 2 nights ago and neither the female or the male has laid on it i dont think. neither one of them seems to be paying much attention to it. does this mean that it is dead? they are both homing pigeons. the egg isnt soft so that isnt a problem. is this a sign that the pigeons are neglecting it? i dont know anything about the way pigeons treat thier eggs or anything like that. please help!

I've read that pigeons usually lay the second egg 24 or 48 hours after the first one. Sometimes they don't sit on the first one until the second egg is laid but other times they'll sit on the first one afer its been laid. If you don't see a second egg or the parents still haven't sat on the first chances are they've lost interest in it.
But if you want the best advice try asking a vet or pigeon breeder what to do, if you pigeons are first time breeders then most likely they haven't quite grasped parent hood just yet. Some pigeons take to parent hood in a snap and then there are other that may need help or naturally can't handle it at all.
But check with a vet or a pigeon breeder for advice.

The egg is just fine. Pigeons don't sit on the first egg except pretty randomly. They will begin to sit tight after the second egg is laid in about 44 hours. Relax.
Pigeon eggs hatch in about 18 days. I suggest you go to this site http://www.angelfire.com/ga3/pigeongenetics/ and look at the page for Basic Pigeon Information.
You're going to have some fun with these and remember, pigeons have been taking care of their own eggs for more than a few million years, so they know what they're doing.
BTW - I've raised pigeons for 45 years, so trust me on this one :-)

the hen will lay an egg every other day. When she is done
laying, she will start brooding them. The male and her will
take turns siting on the eggs. The reason they don't start
brooding right away is, they want them to hatch all together. Its easier
for the parents if they hatch this way, and the babies have a better chance of surviving

Pigeons often don't set on their first egg, because it is best that incubation starts with the second egg so that both babies will hatch at the same time and thus grow at the same speed. If they set the first one right away, that baby will hatch first, get fed first, and outgrow the second baby, and it will starve to death.
