Riddle me this !?

Subtract the $2 that the bellhop kept instead of adding.

They paid $9 each for a total of $27. The hotel received $25 and the bellhop received $2.

The answer is in the way the question is worded. You cannot add what one person HAS to what someone else has PAID and come up with any kind of a meaningful number, you have to subtract.

Each man has paid $9.

The bellhop has $2.

Difference

$9 x 3 = $27

The hotel clerk has the other 25 dollars.

To look at it from the standpoint of the original $30. Each man has $1.

The bellhop has $2.

The hotel clerk has $25.

Each man did not pay $9.00. When the manager refunded the $5, that meant the cost of the room was $25.00, so each man paid $8.33 1/3 for a total cost of $25.00. The other $5.00 was divided between the 3 men ($1 each) and the bellhop kept the remaining $2.00 for a total of $30.

You don't add the $2 the bell hop kept, it is part of the $27. $25 for the room and $2 for the bell hop = $27 = $9 each.
