I just started looking at Engagement rings and there are so many choices out there, so I was wondering what would be a good price range to start with. I was thinking $1000-$1500, but I don't know if that is seen as being to cheap or not.

How much to spend is everyone's personal choice. The two month's salary is a nice rule of thumb... but I totally agree with you that will put you back a ways from getting a house... probably spending less here is ok.

Anyways, we just did the ring shopping thing... and priced the stone and the ring seperately. In gold, the ring is probably going to cost you somehwere in the $200 range. Which leaves the rest to be spent on diamond. I had the fiance come in and help me choose... after all... she's going to wear the thing for the rest of her life (or at least for the next six months, no?)... but if you don't do that, you probably should at least see if she wants emerald, round brilliant, etc. That way at least its the right shape. Other than that... I'd say you can get a decent half carat stone for that price... not top of the line by any means, but decent. The nice thing about diamonds is that they are beautiful things. Unless you're examining it closely... or up against other diamonds, all you're really going to notice is its sparkle anyways.

Well, two months salary is a rough rule that you can follow. Unfortunately, if you have a lot of debt that still might be hard.

Try bluenile.com to get an idea of what you can afford. EBay also has a lot of great prices out there. It really depends on you- what you want to spend and do you want a small high quality stone or a larger lower quality stone. Stay away from Mall type stores because they jack up the prices to pay for their rent!

Also try BJ's wholesale- they have great rings that would cost triple anywhere else and you could get a 1 carat ring total weight there for about $1,500. But $1,500 is on the lower side so your going to have to look around.

My fiance and I ran into this issue. We picked out the ring after we got engaged. We had a tighter budget to work with, but we managed to find a ring that both of us could be proud of! Since the ring you are looking at is not all diamonds, it will make the cost a lot less. Is this what she wants or has hinted as wanting....Remember, what you like and what she likes are two different things. Kind of get a feel for what she likes. The main thing to remember is quality of the stones outweigh the quantity in karat.

Spend time searching on the internet. See what styles look good, prices etc...then when you have an idea of what you want head to the jewelry stores.

Keep these alternatives in mind as a way to get a really great ring for a lot less money. Look at second hand rings, estate pieces. My ring cost $600 but was appraised at $2200...we bought it from a jewelry store where the owner had set out several pieces she bought from estate sales. Look at diamond brokers. My brothers bought their wives rings from a dimaond broker in Kentucky and all of them got great deals on them!

No matter what make sure that when you are looking at them that you inpect the diamonds for flaws with a jewelers glass and make sure the band is sturdy at the bottom.Many jewlers stretch the bands to size them and they break and are a pain to repair.

We bought my setting for $225. I have a friend in the family that owns a jewelry store and my husband picked out a half carat from an estate purchase (the jeweler friend buys them and puts them in new settings blah blah blah) for $1100. The jewelry store we bought the setting from tried to sell us a 1/4 carat diamond for the price range we were in. My husband got a deal for $1300 and I could care less that the diamond might have belonged to so old lady- actually it appeals to me more because I pretend she and her husband we married for eternity and were each others true soulmate. Anywho- our price range was just like your $1500 and we got in under $1300. Maybe you can look into the estate diamond avenue? You'd have to find a mom & pop jewelry store though- the ones at the mall don't do that stuff. Do your homework though- no one likes to get ripped off. Can I suggest Shaneco.com? They have a neat thing where you can design a ring- I bought my setting from them- they were also the ones that told me a 1/4 was all our budget could afford. But it's fun to put the rings together regardless. Congrats!

My engagement ring probably cost under $800... and I LOVE it! You see, I handed over my grandmother's engagement ring, and my fiance used the center stone to create a new one -- just for me! (So his only cost was the new band/setting...) Of course, some girls may not appreciate all that. DO go for quality rather than size alone. DO select a style she would like. DON'T go into debt for a ring. And DON'T forget that you can always get a simple solitaire now and add to it later on -- with ring guards and such -- when you can afford more.

Usually with a smaller budget, you want to look for a thinner ring style. This will make the diamond stand out more and keep the price of the mount down so you can use a larger stone. Use amythyst as a very small accent stone as well and because they aren't as hard a s diamond, keep them flush I attached a ring style that might work based on that.

Your price range is fine. I didn't want a huge stone and didn't want to go in debt over a ring, so that's about how much mine cost. A think a 1/2 or 3/4 carat ring with the side stones should fit perfectly in your budget.

The ring is supposed to be a symbol of the two of you deciding to get married. While I don't think that $50 is a good amount, the ring will probably be fake and leave marks on her finger, it's what ever you can afford. Mine cost about $1000 and I didn't think that was being cheap. I think they price range you are looking at is fine.
