Why do I get these headaches after lunch?

Everyday I get a headache after I eat lunch. Only lunch, no other meal. I know I am eating right and making good food choices (salad, grilled chicken, tuna, etc). Also, by the end of lunch, I have usually had 4 of my 8 glasses of water so dehydration shouldn't be an issue. Anyone have a suggestion or insight into this?

consuming some of the tastiest vittles causes a pounding headache.

Food-related headaches are a common problem. For those who suffer from migraines as a result of eating certain foods, the problem can be debilitating. Food-related headaches are usually sensed on both sides of the head, occur within a specific amount of time after a substance is consumed and disappear when the substance is eliminated from the diet.

A food that commonly triggers these headaches is cheese, particularly aged cheeses such as blue cheese, Brie, cheddar, Stilton, feta, Gorgonzola, mozzarella, Muenster, Parmesan, Swiss and processed cheese. This is due to its tyramine content, which increases as a food ages. Tyramine is produced from the amino acid tyrosine and increases blood flow to the brain. Besides cheese, tyramine tends to be high in foods such as beer, red wines, vermouth, processed meats, homemade breads, sour cream, overripe bananas, figs, raisins, avocados, eggplant, pickled herring, canned soups, yogurt, chocolate and soy sauce. Certain food additives, such as nitrites, and some food colorings also commonly trigger these headaches. Monosodium glutamate (MSG)--often found in Chinese foods and many packaged foods--is believed to induce headaches, but experts continue to debate its effects.

If you notice you're prone to headaches after eating specific foods, pay attention to what you've eaten when you get the headaches. Check out "Heads Up" at right for common food-related headache triggers.

it might have to do with the timing of your lunch. maybe your blood sugar levels are fluctuating.

the headaches might be coincidental with your lunch not caused by it. is it really everyday? only on workdays? what do you do for work?

i would ask a doctor. not that i think it is anything serious (most brain tumors don't cause headaches!), but just because it must be really annoying to have headaches all the time.

hope you get this worked out!

Hey shashi, If you're unable to bear the problem then kill your hunger by eating in parts. Most follow the same - divide and rule policy. Also, eat more of cucumber and raw vegetables to keep off headache. Stay away from Alcholic drinks and areated drinks. Also when your headache is bugging you when hot, try south indian mango pickle(avakai) with hot rice and am sure your headache will vanish. Cheers.

Proper treatment of headaches involves careful diagnosis to locate the disturbance actually causing headache pain. It is very important to keep track of your headaches so your doctor can properly diagnose your headache pain, type, and causes. One of the most important tools in headache prevention are is the headache diary. It is used in determining the underlying causes and patterns related to your headache. Use the diary to record on the days you get headaches:

    Intensity of Pain (Low) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 (High)

Location of Pain (e.g., back of neck, etc.)

    Treatment/Medication Taken

    Effect of Treatment

    Hours of Sleep

You could have some possible food sensitivities. I thought I was making good choices with the food I was eating but kept having headaches, congestion, face flushing and other annoyances. I went to a food allergist and he was no help. I found a Naturopath who uses science based information from blood and urine tests to figure out an eating plan for me. It has been amazing.
