1989 Buick Skylark with tranny trouble.?

If you have metal particles/shavings in the trans fluid, most likely you'll need a complete overhaul. Gears are stripped. With transmissions, you gets what you paid for just like everything else. If you've never done ot before, take to the shop.

I have a bad fear that with the car being already 17 years old, having the transmission rebuilt will probably cost more than the car is worth. Its possible your linkage may be a little sloppy, and that can easily be tightened with some new cotter pins and tightening everything up. The best solution I could offer to you is find someone private who works on cars on the side (and make sure s/he is trusted by a personal source) to see if they could put a secondhand transmission into your car. You should be able to find one either at a junkyard, or possibly there may be a secondhand car parts dealer in your area. I've got a hunch that a lot of different cars had the same transmission (knowing how GM handles their parts), so finding one shouldn't be like finding a needle in a haystack.

Have you checked the fluid level? Smell the dipstick. Does it have a burned smell to it? Is it a dark color? If so it needs rebuilding. Usually, if the tranny is slipping that indicates that the clutches and bands are worn out. Low fluid levels will cause it to disengage on turns. However, being worn out can also cause this. Yes you can have it rebuilt.

Get another tranny, it's your best bet. A remanufactured is better, a rebuild could be just a temporary fix as most shops just replace the obviously wore parts, not all of them.

The gear bearings r bad so u need 2 have it rebuilt.

its needs properly rebuilt and dont skimp, you can find one in a junk yard but if its junk then whats the chances of it lasting long
