Any Elizabethan/Country music experts?

Difficult stuff. Start with simple stuff.

Firstly - techniques

* rhyme and structure - common to both

sonnet - 14 lines - rhyme structure:

-A/-B/-A/-B/-C/-D/-C/-D/-E/-F/-E/-F/-G/-G

country music - multiple forms - often rhyming but uncommonly with assonance or no rhyme - in a 4 or 8 or 12 line stanza

* language, content

sonnets usually contain examples of classical figurative language (personification, metaphor, simile, alliteration, onomatopoea) as descriptive tools.

country music is usually more straightforward, but many examples of figurative language can be found

Love is a popular topic for both media

Are they artistic artifacts or expressing real feelings ... well, surely this is interpretational. Art is the expression of an artists emotion through the medium. If you got the feeling that it was a churned out sonnet or a churned out formula based song, perhaps the artist's emotion is more along the lines of "I need money" than "oooh I'm in love"

Why do people express their love in such ways?

It's fun. It can make money. It can embarrass people, or please people, or hurt people.

Expression of emotion in any medium is up for interpretation. Do you think true love exists in the first place? Do you think it can be an emotion that people can express in an artistic form? Some authors believe love to be an action or an activity ... and not, in fact, an emotion. My favourite definition is the one by M Scott Peck in "The Road Less Travelled" where he describes love as the Will to encourage the spiritual growth of one's self or of another person. Steven Covey describes love as an act, action or activity. Difficult to know how that can be put into an artistic medium, except that the very action of trying is an expression of love.

A genre gives rules and guidelines. The artist should be able to break them judiciously. Observe in movies where people blur the lines between action and comedy, in painting/sculpture where mixed media are used and in music where the lines are stepped on and stepped over. The genre limits, but knowing where those limits are allows the artist to explore.
