How can I transform .mp4 video file into .avi (Xvid or DivX) format?

My friends and I can't play these files on our Linux or BSD computers, so please let me have some ideas on how to change the format and be able to watch it. Thanks.

I have been able to watch mp4 video on my Linux box. If you go to the MPlayer web site http://www.mplayerhq.hu/ and download the latest codecs. Read the README file and copy the codecs to the correct locations.

I use OpenSuSE 10.1 and SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 and have it working on both.
