What is meant the concept of "Communication Convention"?

I think it's meant to be a way of communicating that respects a certain agreed upon protocol. For example, nodding to say yes and shaking the head to say no are non-verbal western communication conventions. Using abbreviations in chat rooms, like BRB, LOL, etc. are chat room communication conventions. I guess you could say it's a special agreed upon code of communication dependent on context.
