Our lab uses ER STAT kits for drug testing and it can't cause a false positive on that kit. I doubt that it would on any drug testing as they are not a related substance.

It very well likely may depend on the test used and the particular formulation of theophylline product used.
If you were a government worker in the United States they(your employer) are required by federal law to use very specific tests, that include Chromatography followed by Mass Spectra and IR spectra.
You should not allow a cheap chemical test be the final word in testing, since a higher and more definitive standard exists, to do so favors one group( government workers) over the rest of the population, and the answer is not to be unfair to all by dropping the government worker standard.
There are some over the counter Theophylline products that contain a small amount of phenobarbital, which is controlled but does really nothing in terms of drug abuse (or therapy) but can give a postive for controlled substances (Phenobarbital) for a long, long time.
