Medical staff: If my head is completely numb on the left side, why does it still itch so bad?

I had surgery for Occipital Neuralgia almost six weeks ago. The Occipital nerve branches were severed near the C2 and C3 vertebrae. The left side of my head is numb (yes, I am a numbskull) yet it still gets incredibly itchy and since I cannot feel myself scratching my head, I can't get rid of the itch. It's driving me crazy. What causes this (I don't have bugs) and how do I control it? Please help!

There are documented cases of people who have had limbs removed and still had an itch on their missing limb. It's called a phantom itch and will go away as soon as you can stop obsessing.

Just relax...if you have a topical anti-itch cream, use it...also, warm compresses should help. It is very normal, I'm afraid.
