YES! I started using computers before most people ever heard of the internet. We used local BBSes and only very few existed that had the capability of chat rooms. We had message bases then. (like news groups or forums). Then multi-line BBSes started to become popular and chat rooms began. (In this day, you had to use a modem and a phone line to dial another phone line. so to have more than one person on a BBS at one time, the BBS had to have more than one phone line coming in... This was expensive!). Everyone you chatted with was usually from the same city as you (due to local phone numbers). We used to have little parties where you could get together and meet the other geeks you chatted with. This spawned the first wave of online romances <cringe!>. Then someone came up with "GlobalChat". Somehow, local BBSes with chat rooms could link to other BBSes in other cities/states and you could chat with their users, too. Now we had long distance online romances <cringe harder!>... Finally, internet came around to cities smaller than say SF and LA. You still had to dial in. There was no graphical stuff. Chatting was done on a program called IRC. Now we could chat easily with people from alllll over the world. In text only. It was, at the time, difficult to get a picture online. and you had to e-mail them. There were no pretty web pages to look at. Finally, the internet advanced enough for the average joe to be able to connect and access stuff like web pages. mIRC came out, a graphics IRC program with buttons and all that stuff. Then the web chat came out. Then messengers like ICQ and on and on and on...
So, with all of those places I started chatting, I talked to literally thousands of people from all over the world. And yes, I miss them. Some of them very much!!! But I can still log into IRC and talk to some geeks I talked to 10 years ago.. But only a small handful, like myself, still have no life and have the time to use IRC... :)
<end useless babble and boring internet history>
