Why do some NFL fans have to question other fan's loyalty because of where they live?
I am tired of people saying "only true Minnesota Vikings Fans are from Minnesota, etc." I mean, who made up the rule that only true fans come from the state. Last I remember there were probably more Steelers fan in Detroit during the super bowl, than Lions fan. I read a bulletin where some guy from Pennsylvania who was a Steelers fan, telling a girl who lived in Virginia she was not a real Steelers fan, because she didn't live in Pennsylvania. His excuse:
"I live around Pittsburg, invest time and revenue in the city, purchase tickets, support local sports on all levels, etc. Doesn't that outweigh the stray Steelers fan from Virginia perhaps?"
Why can't a fan be a fan, without other fellow fan bashing them because of where they live? Why do these people do that anyways?

I agree with you completely... I myself am a Bears fan all my life, only one in a family of Giants fans, and have never even been to Chi-town. However, I've also followed them year in and year out from before they won in '85 to now, and it hasn't been easy, they've sucked for a LONG time. What I love are the fans in Chicago who haven't followed them through the years because they were so bad, but now they've all got the Urlacher jerseys on because they're solid contenders again and have a sick defense.
No matter where you are, fans will always come out of the woodwork for a popular team, and it's often those people who feel the need to validate the fact that they're fans. To do so they put down out of state fans, making them seem like they've been fans all along. True fans who have been around for awhile don't give a rat's a$$ where other fans live, they just respect the added support for their team!

Sometimes I think the true fans are the ones who support a team even when they're not near that team's home city. As a Cowboys fan living just outside of Washington, DC, I can assure you that it is much more difficult to be a Dallas fan than it would be if I lived in Texas. I get booed, jeered, and yelled at whenever I show up at a Redskins - Cowboys game, something I'm sure Cowboys fans are free from at Texas Stadium. I think going through all that for my team makes me a bigger fan than your average fan living in Dallas.

I think "fan bashing" is - a.l.m.o.s.t. - a sport of it's own. Since fans aren't actually on the playing surface and not an athlete of the game itself, they have a tendency to create their own little game with other competitive fans. It's basically good clean fun until the line gets crossed which we all know occurs way too often. My respect goes to fans who are true to their team regardless of location and don't hop wagons when things go sour.
Carbon Units are strange, unpredictable and awesome.

It's because people don't understand that people today move around a lot. I'm a Redskin fan in a Cowboy dominated town. I bleed burgundy and gold. I think it can really prove your loyalty if you get flack for who your team is. If people don't understand it then that's their problem. Stick by your team. Even if your team's fans give you a hard time.

Because Steelers fans suck!
Okay, besides that, because people are petty and have to find a way to make themselves superior to others to stroke their ego which has been crippled by their own failure in life to rise above the semi-impoverished blue collar existence they once abhorred and now personify?
Just guessing :)
