Are you better off now than you were 5 years ago, financially?
I am a little less than I was then, and alot less off than 10 years ago . I'm making more money but spending much more due to higher expenses.

As a single example, the maximum allowed expense per year for Dental on your insurance is around $1000.
That's the same as it was in 1960!
Yes, 1960!
If properly adjusted for inflation, it should be closer to $5000. Dirty little secret of just ONE industry -- health insurance.
So while you might be making more, more of it is leaving your wallet for dramatically inflated standards that used to be affordable.
While the rich just keep gettin' richer...

Yes and no. Five years ago I hardly had any debt, was single and I rented and apartment. I was able to spend a little more money and have a little more fun. Now, I have kids and a home and the expenses that come with all of that. My income is higher and so is my husbands. But we are still tight and can;t do all the fun stuff like before. I am definitley living the American dream.

Yes and no. Five years ago I was in high school and really didn't have any expences besides stuff that I wanted. I'd babysit and make some cash and then spend it on clothes or going out with friends. Now, I'm finishing college and going into debt from student loans, but I'm gaining a valuable education for that cost. I'm living on my own, paying for pretty much everything on my own. I guess that's just what comes with age and growing up and changing "phases" of life.

I am not better off. I moved to a different state just over 4 years ago. Cost of living here is higher, and I'm still not making the wage I was in my previous state...I have also added a couple of bills I didn't have there (cable tv/internet and cell phone).
