Why not try a blend of the two? Rosemount (Australia) has a merlot/shiraz blend that is really good. Also, they are going to stop bottling their 1.5 liter bottles, so right now, they are really bargain-priced!
For USA. Pepperwood Grove is an excellent merlot ($10 or less) and, until the first of the year, you can get a mail-in rebate of $30 on a case (12 bottles).

My personal favorite is definitely Merlot; sometimes referred to as a close cousin of Cabernet Sauvignon, but I think with more body.
I like Chilean wines, and a reliable, inexpensive house that I rely on is Concha y Toro. Try their 2003 Marques de Casa Concha Merlot which receives a 90 rating from Wine Spectator. BTW that is THE publication for wine ratings.

definitely Merlot, i love blackberry Merlot, the only problem with that is you mostly taste the blackberry part instead of the Merlot, which just leaves you smashed out of your mind....

First of all it's best to learn to spell 'Shiraz' before asking!
What's better for who? For you? For me?
How can you ask giving no more info?
Oh, PS ~ Blackberry merlot is not a wine. It's a girl soda.
