How to get rid of a cross on my desktop?

I recently changed the desktop background picture from one on internet.

Then I ended up having a cross in the middle of the desktop close to the upperborder. I tried to change to a different picture on my computer but the cross is not disappearing.

The cross is similar to one you find when a picture on any webpage does not show up.

Update:

Mine is Windows XP.

How to format the drive with pictures.?

Right click on your desktop, properties, desktop tab, customize my desktop, delete all you find in the box. dont forget to hit apply. Select none for your destop picture and see if the box is gone. If so, go ahead and choose a pic. If not, I would have to say your system has some type of adware in it.
