Why are anime fans like this?

A vast majority of people who like anime are also into computer games/hardware, are either too chubby or too skinny, have old fashioned side-parted hair, and are socially inept.

I'm wondering, what is the connection between their hobby and their general characteristics?

Not trying to insult anyone, but you have to admit that this reigns true for the most part.

So why is it so? The interests these people have don't seem to directly connect with the personality traits they inherit. I.E. you don't have to be socially inept to enjoy anime, but most of them are.

Is it social pressure? Some sort of genetic programming? Or what?

*Please note that this is a serious question, I'm not flaming anyone, but this has been my honest observation all my life.

Update:

harvey, please learn to read, I didn't say my description is true for *all* of you, but it encompasses *a lot* of you.

I also enjoy anime from time to time, but I find that most of my friends who are really into it are as I described above.

Update 2:

Oh and harvey, funny how someone with a girlfriend must resort to asking this:

Any single ladies interested in me?

Guess you're either not very loyal, or just lame :)

You may think that because of what you see that it is true for the majority of those individuals but there is a reason why sociological studies are done with random sampling. Your biased perception influences what you see and typically causes you to only see things that support your hypotheses. I would suggest doing some actual research rather than relying only on what you see. Maybe another thing that would be good to look at, if you find that your perception actually is true is to ask why is there a lack of other types of people who are anime fans (like what are the socially adept people doing since there aren't many who are anime fans?).

Ahh~ I so agree with you and most of the other answers... Some things that bother me are: Dubs... I just prefer things in their original form. I'll try not to complain about them though, since other people have already expressed their dislike for that. But the thing that REALLY bothers me about dubs is when they dub the freaking opening/ending song. Anybody ever watched the ending of the English version of Ouran? Gag. Dx The "I love everything Japan!" fandom, which I just find disturbingly ignorant. You can't judge an entire country based on it's pop culture and entertainment industry, no matter how fascinating they are. Japan has a much darker side, as do most countries. As the above answer says, the fangirls who use [half the time incorrectly] "kawaii", "desu", "ne", etc. in their usual speaking of another language. When yaoi fans bash yuri and its fans for being "disgusting" or whatever, and vice versa. Like Blacked Winged Assassin said, the huge amount of weak and useless female characters in anime, and harem anime, which are all the same stupid story. Also fillers, Narutards, people who call themselves otaku and aren't, and changing the animation style (i.e. Minami-ke), like you said.

I think that most of this has to do with recognizing social skills and the integrity needed to enjoy most anime.... let me expand:

Many people who develop social skills recognized as having the ability to be 'popular' or outgoing in high-school either have weak social skills but a conformist and leadership attitude, or they simply had low ethical standards while attaining a somewhat adept psychological understanding as to attain friendships through adolescent actions.

Most anime has some part of which requires and committed viewership. This means that you usually can't pick up on a series in one-go.

On the other side, you could see it that anime deals with emotional issues and insecurities in friendships and social skills. People grouped as being 'socially inadequete' might find console in seeing people survive as individuals; live without society as we know it. People with a minimal understanding of emotions and society's interactions will attach themselves to situations that require little understanding of real-life interactions or a dramatic sense involving little plot involvement.

In all, I don't believe there is any true connection between anime-viewers and the possession of true social skills.

That doesn't describe me and I love all of that. That's a shallow perception indeed. I have a life and a girlfriend.

What are your own characteristics? You clearly look for fault in other peoples.

THANK YOU. You are so right... I hate anime and had a lot of friends who started to get into it and now... we're not friends anymore. Travis is the only one... he's really smart and funny and interesting except when he brings up anime, he gets stuck, and really excited, and WONT stop talking about it.

Anime makes me sick. Maybe the answer you're looking for is that there is something similar between anime and a soap opera, so their brains get hooked and it becomes overly important.... I can't figure it out. Thanks again though, for bringing this up. I've been saying this for years.
