The Open Era in tennis began in 1968, when the Grand Slam events such as the Wimbledon Championships abandoned the longstanding rules of amateurism and allowed professionals to compete.

tennis tournaments used to allow only amateur to compete..in 1968 they open their door to the professionals ..and..from there onwards..its called open era.

It is since they introduced tournaments that are open to players not necessarily on the tour (US Open, British Open, etc.)
