What does the term 'open era' in tennis mean?

Many times we hear records about the open era in tennis, what does it mean. For eg. Federer is only the third player to win 3 grand slams 3 consecutive times in the open era...!

The Open Era in tennis began in 1968, when the Grand Slam events such as the Wimbledon Championships abandoned the longstanding rules of amateurism and allowed professionals to compete.

The one and only Roger Federer who has 13 Grandslams, 57 career singles titles, 237 weeks at no.1, only player to achieve 5 Wimbledons and 5 US opens in a row. Go Rogi!
