what's a good hiking boot or shoe?

i've been hiking twice in a pair of comfortable tennis shoes. the soles of those shoes are completely trashed now.

    I do a lot of hiking with a pack (40 + lbs) and with just a day pack. You will want a different shoe for each. A stiff sole fore heavy loads and a less stiff sole for lighter loads. Goretex (or similar) is a must. EMS is a great place to start. If you have wide feet they don,t have a very good selection though. I like Vasque shoes but expect to pay $150 or more.Best bet talk to a sales person at EMS to get started.
