Anyone know a card game called "Tonk"? Any info you can share?

My dad taught me to play cards including various poker games when I was seven. One of these "poker" or "betting" card games he taught me was called "Tonk". That was 43 years ago. Since that time I have only met 2 other people who know how to play the game. I have seen it referred to in two different fiction books. There seems to be a military connection. My dad is ex-military. One of the people who knew the game was ex military and both books were military or scifi/military fiction. The other person who knew the game was an "afro-american". He told me that "Tonk" was a card game played by a lot of "afro-americans". Being as there is a high percentage of "afro-americans" in the military, this could explain the connection.

Do you have any info on the game of "Tonk" or it's history that you can share with me?

(Note: I am not a racist. I used the term "afro-american" in quotes in the hope of not to insulting anyone.)

My dad taught me to play Tonk when I was a little girl. He also taught me to play spades and back-alley-bridge. I was usually his groups "5th" when one of his buddies couldn't make it to the game :) I've included some links that I hope will help ya out. I think that last link will probably be the most useful

    Tonk Card Game

tonk is a five card game simular to rummy in which a sequence of cards [spread] are laid to get a lower total number than the opponate.

dealing a total of 50 is automatic win; if one spreads three cards and the opponate can [hit] on the spread then the spreader must stay another round

the object is to get lower total than opponate and when you believe you have them beat to drop and win the pot.if you get caught you must match the pot.

    five cards are standard deal

very fast paced street gambling game, common among black americans. allso no disrespect intended
