  • Do you think "we" (the common people) could get along if it wasn't for governments and religions?

For 15 years, twice a year, I got to a Mineral, Crystal and Fossil show. These shows go on for about a week. During that week I see people from all over the world interact; Americans, Brazilians, Australians, Afghani, Indians, French, Germans, etc. At the end of each day, we gather and talk. Most of us have seen each other at this and other similar shows for years. We all get along. There is a great deal of fellowship and friendship.

Have you seen similar occurances? Do you think that if it wasn't for governments, religions and power mad individuals, all of us "common people" would get along and the planet might be a peaceful, harmonious place? Or am I full of it?

  • Question about the origin of the slang term "Broad". Please read details before getting insulted.?

I have always thought that the slang term "Broad" was derogatory means by which to refer to women. I assumed it's origin was due to the wide hips or pelvic region that some women have especially after they have had children.

Then my father, an 80 year old from Brooklyn, New York, told me that originally it was not a derogatory term. He said the term was actually used to refer to a pretty or beautiful woman and that it was considered a compliment. He said the word derived from the word "Broadway" because all the prettiest or most beautiful women were working on Broadway. So, according to Dad, the women working on Broadway became known as Broads. Then it slowly spread in usage during the 30's and later evolved into a more derogatory term and the origin was forgotten.

Can anyone especially those from New York or the NE coast of the US confirm this? I have done searches and found some evidence that the term was used to refer to pretty women but I can't confirm his story

    1. Ebay and other "auction" sales type sites

    3. my own "in house book store" where I use sites like alibris and abebooks and addall

Anyone have experience they can share. It will be appreciated.

I am interested in selling all kinds of books, pb and hb. I also have some rare books on esoteric subjects.

I will be asking this question in the business/small business section also. Thanks

  • Should we consider changing our national anthem? I'd like your opinion.?

Let me be clear! I love our national anthem, The Star Spangled Banner. However, I love Ray Charles' version of "America the Beautiful" even more. The music of the Star Spangled Banner was originally "To Anacreon in Heaven," a popular British drinking-song. From the research I've done, it's seems that both the lyrics and the music of "America the Beautiful" is all american.

Yes, I love The Star Spangled Banner. But how cool would it be at the olympics, after hearing constant militant, strident national anthems, to hear Ray tickle the ivory and then start to sing "America the Beautiful"?

I am asking this question in more than one category. I'm interested in seeing if there is a difference in the answers I get in one category versus another. You are welcome to answer this question more than one time but if you do, bear in mind the category. In music answer it as a music question. In politics, answer the question as a political question. Thanks.

  • Cat behavior question - why does the cat sometimes attack my wife?

We have the most loving, person oriented cat possible. We've both had other cats but this cat is the best cat either of us have ever had. He is a little over 2 years old, neutered, orange tabby. 98% of the time, he is just a big purr ball of love. However every once in a while he seems to freak out and attack my wife - lunge at her and bite her. He never does that to me. His attacks do not correspond to my wife's monthly cycle in any way. Yet we wonder if because he never attacks me, is this some kind of male/female issue? The only semi-frequent repetitive condition we can tie to these attacks seems to be when she is trying to discipline him and tells him "NO". (Even this frequency is less than 50%.) Sometimes he acts bored and like he doesn't get played with enough. Otherwise, he's a happy cat. Anybody out there - owners or trainers - have any idea on why he attacks her or suggestions on how to handle the situation?

  • I'm trying to obtain a copy of a video made in the 80's or 90's?

where a group of black male hip hop(?) dancers perform parts of the Nutcracker Suite with white female ballerinas. The ballerinas performed the ballet in the traditional style. However the black hip hop (?) dancers performed in the street dancing style of the decade. The male black dancers were a regularly performing group and wore yellow and orange outfits. I think they wore an orange beret also. It was funny. Yet even as divergent as the two styles of dance were, they actually looked good together. The dance was kind of a visual dichotomy that "worked". It was funny yet the two dance styles worked together. Any info - name of video, dance group, etc. will be appreciated.

  • Anyone know a card game called "Tonk"? Any info you can share?

My dad taught me to play cards including various poker games when I was seven. One of these "poker" or "betting" card games he taught me was called "Tonk". That was 43 years ago. Since that time I have only met 2 other people who know how to play the game. I have seen it referred to in two different fiction books. There seems to be a military connection. My dad is ex-military. One of the people who knew the game was ex military and both books were military or scifi/military fiction. The other person who knew the game was an "afro-american". He told me that "Tonk" was a card game played by a lot of "afro-americans". Being as there is a high percentage of "afro-americans" in the military, this could explain the connection.

Do you have any info on the game of "Tonk" or it's history that you can share with me?

(Note: I am not a racist. I used the term "afro-american" in quotes in the hope of not to insulting anyone.)

  • How much money do you think should be spent on keeping a pet healthy and alive considering...?

This is a question regarding ethics and morals. That is why I did not post this in the pet section. Nor is this a financial question.

In a world where many people don't have enough money to afford adequate health care or even needed operations, can I justify spending money to keep my cat alive and healthy? If you say yes, is there a point monetarily where you can no longer justify the expense?

I love my cat. He is a good and faithful friend. However, these days, vet bills are considerable. Non-pet people may not realize this but gone are the days where spending $60 to $100 a year on a pet was a lot of money. That's the cost of one vet appointment. These days veterinary medicine has progressed to the point where they can do chemotherapy on a pet. It's expensive. But expense is not the question. I can justify spending a certain amount on my pet. But I wonder if it's ethically or morally "right" to "heal" my cat (no matter the cost) when humans go without needed medical attention

  • When it's raining why run instead of walk?

Imagine that you've parked your car in a parking lot. It is 100 feet to the door of the mall. It's raining. Why do people run to the door instead of walk?

It seems to me that quantity of rain drops in a given volume of air (say one cubic foot) is a constant (as long as it doesn't start to "rain harder"). At the extreme ends of the scale (the slow end being walking as slow as a turtle and the fast end being "you move as fast as the Flash and can dodge between the drops) there will be a difference in how wet you get. BUT if the difference in speed amounts to an average walking speed where you take care to avoid the puddles of water versus the speed of the mad dash most people use to run 100 feet from their car, it seems to me that there is no difference in how wet you get. By running you just "run" into more water drops over a shorter time period so you get equally as wet as if you walked. .

Do you agree? Can you use equations to justify your reasoning. This is not homework.

  • Does anyone else remember Danny "Little Red" Lopez?

If you do, tell me one of your memories of his fights. I never got to see him fight live. However I think that as a boxing fan brought up by a father who was a boxing fan, I remember Little Red Lopez's fights as my favorite ones. It always seemed to me that Little Red Lopez was knocked down more often in the first round than any other fighter I remember. Yet he always seemed to win these fights. In fact, it seemed that the more often he was knocked down in the first round, the more likely it was he would win the fight. How could you not love a "tall" (for a featherweight), lanky, irish looking red-haired boxer who said he was irish, mexican and native american and went by the name of Little Red Lopez. Does anyone know if Danny has an email address or someway to be contacted? I don't want anything other than to tell him how much I enjoyed his fights.

  • Should men should have a voice (or a vote) in deciding whether or not women may have abortions?

This is not a question regarding the morality of abortion. It's not about Pro-choice or Pro-Life. Nor am I saying that men can't have an opinion. This is strictly a question regarding whether males should have a "vote" in deciding this issue. I'm asking for your opinion. I'm asking you to take this serious. I'm asking you to spare me the religious dogma.

Being as it's the woman who has to bear the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual consequences of the decision she makes regarding her pregnancy, why should males "have a vote" on this issue? No matter what the decision is, it's the woman whose life will be most affected. She will undergo physical changes. She will have emotional issues whether she aborts, gives the baby up for adoption or keeps the baby.

I am male and feel that men will never be faced with these issues but women (whether they have been pregnant yet or not) will at some point in their lifes be confronted with all these aspects of the issue.

  • I'm curious. Which group of people on Yahoo Answers annoys you more?

Who annoys you more - the religious fanatics that share/force their views on us in the guise of asking a question or the sex fiends that seem impelled to share their sexual fantasies or perversions with us? In my case, the religious fanatics irritate me more than the sex fiends do. I tend to find the sex fiends sad, pathetic and somewhat humorous. What is your reaction? Or is there some other group on yahoo answers that gets your vote for most annoying?

  • Question regarding use of the definite article "the" in English versus American?

To be clear, I am making a differentiation as to the English language as it's spoken by the British commonwealth versus the English language as it's spoken by Americans. In the text of this question I am refering to English as the language and grammar as spoken by the British commonwealth and I am referring to American as the brand of English spoken by Americans.

Here is one example of what I am referring to. Americans will say "My friend is in the hospital.". Whereas English speakers in Great Britain (I don't know about Australia or Canada) will say "My friend is in hospital."

Is there a difference in rules of grammar for English versus American? Or in English (versus American) do certain nouns not require an article?

It's a small question but I've always been curious as to the answer.

This is a serious question and I'm hoping for a serious answer however one of the best parts of yahoo answers is the wisecrack remarks you all send in. So have fun.
