I have windows 98 on the work pc, Can I safely install xp over it?
Here's the deal, On this pc we are running 98, I've got a xp disk at home and was wondering if i can just install xp over 98 , without losing anything?
I'll make a back up disk and what not, I just don't want to have to uninstall 98, and then install xp. I shouldn't have any problems... Right?

Microsoft Corp. is tightening the noose for those people running illegal or pirated copies of its Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home, Windows XP Tablet editions and Windows 2000 software on their systems.
ADVERTISEMENT Starting Tuesday, it will be mandatory for users of this Windows software to certify that their software is a genuine and legal copy before they will be able to receive any updates except security patches and fixes via Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and the Download Center.
Some 80 million Microsoft Windows customers use those three services every month.
The updates that will be withheld for those users who refuse to allow their software to be validated include those for Windows Media Player, DirectX for gaming, the new Windows anti-spyware products--in short, everything except critical security fixes, said David Lazar, Microsoft's Director for Genuine Windows in Redmond, Wash.
While there is an Office Validation Assist program that currently validates Office users' licenses, Lazar was not specific as to whether Microsoft plans to expand this Windows Genuine Advantage program to other products.

Yes you will have problems unless that is an unused registered genuine xp disk. If it's your home system backup, then I think it's a crime to install it on another pc. YOu probably don't have admin permissions at work anyway/. Your boss will be happy when the boys from Microsoft knock on his door. Guess who gets to walk then??
Seems to me when I installed xp about 60% of my drivers were instantly obsolete and I spent days updating to xp drivers.
It's been plenty long now, why don't you research 98 to xp problems and solutions.
Whatever you do, make sure your data are backed up on cd or something.

In case you have enough free disk space I'd advise you to install XP as second OS .. then when computer starts you could select which Windows to run, it's easy, the main thing in this case is to prepare properly your drives on HDD, you are to have 2 primary disks.
If you install XP over 98 you would be to install Office programs again,.. configure your mail client again, etc... though your documents and files could be (safe) not deleted.

Yup! You can install XP over 98. Just install XP through Boot CD and You can install in different drive so u can have both 98 and XP
OR
While installing it'll ask you for quickformat/format C DRIVE do it carefully don't format any other drive(you may lose all your data in that drive) and before doing this method take backup of required files from C DRIVE that includes files in desktop, my documents, etc.

Honest Answer: Don't know! There are too many variables unknown, as Computers during 99 to 2001 when '98 stopped selling, are in the bottom bracket of the XP systems. XP most probably will run, but will it run well is really the question, and with all it's hardware working. That computer is now over 5 years old, now considered a old PC in today's fast moving market.

No, don't do it.
1) Your Windows XP disk is licensed for your home pc, not work pc.
2) Companies Risk Big Penalties for Copying Software
3) Your work pc probably doesn't meet Windows XP minimum requirements.

No problem if you have the momery, bring your ram to 512 for max preformance. Window will take care of Win 86 for you while it installs. Do not delete Win 98, you need it to install XP
