What specifically are you asking about consumer awareness? If I take your question literally than I would assume you were talking about individuals and their ability to identify real cost in everyday life. As a consumer who uses her understanding of economics in everyday life, I can tell you that understanding supply and demand helps me determine whether or not I should be paying a certain price of an item, why the item is so high at one store and lower at another, and the fluctuation in price as time goes by. I also use opportunity cost when shopping. If I spend 13.00 on off brand laundry detergent vs 6.00, the opportunity cost maybe fabric softner or chicken so that my laundry detergent will last longer. In the same respect if I buy 13.00 off brand detergent, using the consumer choice theory, my util may decrease because it does not give me the same cleanliness as the other brand or the same comfort, thus increasing the opportunity cost. I think that people do not take into account opportunity cost or marginal utility when they are spending. There has to be a certain ammount of satisfaction achieved when purchasing, if not I believe as humans, we create our own misery. Being unsatisfied with purchases, spending, or self-resourcefulness can lead to overcompensation in other areas (eating, gambling, overspending on unneccessary items) and created a cycle of poverty. Since economics is a social science, it's the social behavior of people that measure and the effects of the choices that we make. I hope this helped. If not sorry, next time be more specific.
