How can I stop a natural backspin.?
Whenever I hit a 5+ iron into a green the ball just stops dead wherever it lands on the green. This is preventing me from 'rolling the ball up the hole' and costing me shots.
How can I groove this out of my swing ??

Stopping dead is desirable with a 5-iron. If you are coming up short, hit a 4-iron. If you can accurately gauge your iron distances and have the ball stop where it lands, that's a good thing.

I think the fact that your ball stops dead is a wonderful thing - my long irons always come in hot and sometimes they run off the green - maybe when you have a back pin or an approach where you have to get it back there, take one more club (4 iron) and if you hit it stiff like your 5 iron, you ball will be 10-15 yards closer to the hole OR you may want to play the ball a bit back in your stance with the same 5 iron so you deloft the club a bit and your shot will come in flatter and will go a bit farther - either one will work, sounds like you strike the ball very well if your 5 iron has some tour sauce on it

I am on tour so I might be able to help. First off, I read everyone up too me, don't do one of those things. Now, when I am trying to TAKE the SPIN OFF the ball I put the ball a little forward of natural position, this will promote a higher loft, but take the spin off. Spin is created from the PINCHING of the golf ball to the ground, so if you move it forward you will have less pinch. Second, a cheat move I do all the time, let's say I need to keep it low and under the wind, yet want it to release, I put the ball back in stance and rub the groves of the club into the ground covering them up in dirt, this will keep the ball from gripping the club as I pinch it. Anyway, sounds like you are coming in a little too steep on the ball, try to leave a smaller divot that is going down after the ball position but has a shallow look to it, remember your divot tells all of what is and has happened in your swing, too large and deep of a divot and you will spin your 1 iron. Try to take the club away at a more shallow, low take-a-way, it will promote a proper longer arc on your downswing. If you take the club up while going back to fast you will create a steep arc that can only be steep on the downswing, hope this helps, see you all at the Boise Open next week.

Tin Cup is right. The cheat move he suggested certainly works. We he says "pinching" the ball that means that you are hitting down onto the ball. If you imagine hitting the ball into the ground it's resting on that will pinch the ball and create backspin. Try to hit through the ball instead of down at the ball and swing with your waist more instead of your arms.

Put Vaseline in the grove, go to a rock hard ball like a pinnacle and move the ball forward in your stance. It should take you about one round to figure out you really don't want much roll on the Green just take one more club and stop it dead in it's tracks.

the fact that your ball doesn't roll to the hole is not 'costing you shots'. if you ball drops and stops then you need to club up or down to get it to the flag.
otherwise, you can try to change your swing to a sweep instead of a pinching style. getting less spin golf balls. play on harder greens. go up a club and use a punch shot.

Move the ball further in your stand, hit it stronger with right hand, make right grip stronger and lefter weaker, hit it softer. Don't do it all at once.
