Has anyone heard of anything like this on a manual tranmission car?

Every once in a while (maybe every couple days) when I drive my car and step down on the clutch to switch gears, the engine continues to rev up, as if I was still pressing down on the gas. Rather than the RPM's dropping down like usual when I push the clutch and lift off the gas, the RPM rises up to about 3000 and stays until I switch gears.

Does anyone know what this could be?

The car is a 2000 Mercury Cougar.

The problem is not with your clutch. It's with your throttle. The first and easiest thing to check is the throttlebody. It might need to be cleaned. Buy a can of cleaner at the auto parts store, turn off the engine, and spray the bejesus out of the inside and outside of the throttlebody. Be sure to open the butterfly valve and spray behind it. This will clean the gunk out of there that might be holding your TB open when you let off the gas peddle. Your engine will be hard to start right after your done spraying the TB, just keep turning over and press the throttle until it fires up. Then take it for a drive to burn that stuff out of there.

If that doesn't work, take it to a mechanic. A sticky throttle can get you into an accident real quick.

I'm guessing that your return spring on the accelerator is greasy and dirty. Look under the hood and see if the rubber covering is in good shape. I had that problem (exactly) and after taking off the 'boot around the accelerator cable, there was grime there... some WD40 and tada! no problems

Bad idle maybe. Or perhaps something is catching on the accelerator or the accelerator cable when you put your foot on the clutch. That's all I can think of right now.

it could be ur throttle positioning sensor which tells the engine how far the peddle is pushed down. also if the butterfly in the TB is stickin it will cause the TPS to think it is at that position.
