Sapporo is a big city with lots to do. I loved it there. There is an area just outside the city called "Historical Village." It is built like an older city. The architecture in Sapporo is great. The Sapporo Beer museum is also great.
Hakodate is another great city.
There are many national parks. The outdoors are just incredible there. Very beautiful.

Only been there once but the main attractions for most visitors are the food and the nature.
In winter you can see Sapporo's winter festival with the huge snow sculptures:

Depending on when you are going there are many different things to see. Lavendar fields, horseback riding, what is especially popular with the Japanese now is the Asahikawa Zoo. Hordes of Japanese are going there! Also if you like ramen noodles, then in Sapporo there are tons of ramen shops.
In the winter is the snow festival.
