What is the purpose of these holes?

Here in the high desert, while attending an estate sale, we noticed that there were several holes dug on the property. They were each approx. 18" square, there was an empty 1/2 gallon plastic milk container inside each and each was covered with what appeared to be the top part of a washing machine. Just the panel with the lid attached and without the piece with the controls. We thought this was a mite peculiar and asked the deceased's stepson what they were for. He had no idea. Do you?

Update:

My current theory is that it may be some kind of rattlesnake trap, but I am really stumped!

Its a wild guess, but depending on the shape of the hole, it could be used to collect rain, dew or condensation.

I recall a survival trick where you could slice a cactus, wedge it along the sides of a hole in the ground, place a small container in the bottom of the hole, cover it with a plastic sheet, place a small rock in the center of the sheet and heat from the sun draws the liquid out of the cactus to the sheet, which drips into a container...and then you have water to drink.
