If you were my daughter, I'd probably steer you in the direction of a Volkswagen or a Honda Civic. Personally, I did buy my son a 2004 VW Jetta TDI (diesel), which is sporty and VERY economical. He wanted the 5 speed version, so, I got it for him, and the gas mileage runs around 53mpg on the highway and 40+ in the city, with around 47-49 for mixed driving. Driven like a diesel should be driven, with slow accelerations, it will last for hundreds of thousands of miles. I've had a 1981 VW diesel 5 speed that lasted 21 years, 326,600 miles and gave me 57mpg. Now that they have turbos in them, the gas mileage can drop to around 53mpg. What a sweat, huh!! I now drive a 2002 VW Jetta TDI that has 73,500 miles on it, gets 47mpg on the highway because it has an automatic transmission, and that I plan on driving "till the wheels fall off" as they say, which should be in 20 years or so. Maintenance on my VWs so far has been non-existent to minimal. Now's a good time to buy the TDI version since the EPA is screwing things up again and making VW go and improve their diesels even more, so they can't import any during 2007, but will be importing more beginning with the 2008 models, and have some 2006 models hanging around. I'd LOVE to get a 2008 model VW diesel, but there's no use in trading in my perfectly operating 2002 VW Jetta TDI. Diesel cost more to use here in Texas, but with the incredible gas mileage, you're still way out ahead of all those gasoline cars. I bought my daughter a 2006 Honda Accord, simply because I could, and that's what she wanted. Or should I say that's what her mother, my ex, wanted me to get her, since she felt she could make me spend more money. I would've been very happy buying her the simplest Honda Civics, since they have excellent reputations for gas mileage and low maintenance and lasting forever. And they're gasoline powered, if you prefer that. You won't get the same mileage that the VW Jetta TDI gets, but, you'll get good enough to make it easy on you. And you can use regular gas, which will be nice for you at the pump. I owned a 1974 and a 1979 Honda Civic, back in the "dark ages", before you were born, and I was VERY impressed with them then, and they've done nothing but gotten better over the years. So the two cars I recommend are VERY GOOD, in reliability and longevity and gas mileage. Oh, you can get American cars cheaper, but their performance and reliability can't anywhere near measure up. And I hate to say that since I'm as RED, WHITE, AND BLUE AMERICAN as they come, but the facts are the facts, and even the American car manufacturers and sellers know that, even though they'll deny the hell out of it, but their sales figures SUCK (pardon my french) in comparison to VW and Honda, so . . .. I wish you the best on your search, and I pray you can get the best car possible. And I just read gurltype r01's answer, and her reference to a VW Rabbit is an excellent idea. That's what my 1981 VW diesel was, and they're excellent, and less expensive than a Jetta. God Bless you.

your age will make your insurance outrageous. stay away from two door cars as that will make you insurance even higher. something nice, reliable should be a honda civic. migh even want to consider something used as they will be cheaper. sunroofs add at least $650 to the overall price so think about that. with minimum wage I'd suggest something used, honda, toyota or nissan (stay away from used American autos)

however if you decide to get something used you can always figure in another $1000 for extra repairs that will come up. it's guaranteed that something the dealer won't tell you is wrong.

the honda civic is something small but not too small, good on gas mileage and very affordable. you can go to your nearest honda dealer and ask for a test drive if they let you. you might have to be with your parents for the test drive. or you can try the new vw rabbit. its pretty nice and affordable too.

It all depends on if you are considering a new or a used car. A Chevrolet Lumina is dependable with few repair problems. Dependability should be a consideration because of the expense for repairs.
