Does real butter spoil?
I accidently left my tub of real butter (not margerine) setting out all night last night, so I need to know if it is spoilt? I smelled it and it smells kind of funny, but I've never took the time to do that before, so I don't know what it is supposed to smell like.

The secret to keeping your butter fresh and spreadably soft is to keep a butter crock on your counter. Before the age of refrigeration, butter was often kept in earthenware pots large and small, sometimes submerged in water. The modern water-submerged butter crock is thought to have first appeared in France in the Middle Ages, and many (not all!) French have been using them since. Such crocks are recently being rediscovered by people who want soft butter.
Crocks keep butter fresh at room temperature (up to about 80° F) on the counter for several weeks without spoiling.
RELAX - the butter you left out overnight isn't spoiled. Most butter sold in the US is salted which has a preservative affect. The odor you are smelling is probably something the butter picked up while in the refrigerator. Odors sometimes cannot be detected in chilled foods but become apparent at room temperature.

During real hot weather I keep it refrigerated. Butter has a high concentration of salt, it will keep it from spoiling for a few days. I only leave out a quarter of a stick at a time. I find I used a lot less too when it is soft.

I leave my Butter out until it gone. I like it soft and easy to use. 3-4 days tops and it has never been bad. Just don't set it on the stove or you have messy butter. BUT, Butter will spoil just like anything else.

If the butter has gone bad it will smell rancid. I never store butter in the refrigerator and so far it has not gone rancid once but I had forgotten all about it for 2/3 weeks at that time.
Taste it and see if it tastes different. If even in the slightest doubt Thrash IT.

eventually yes it will. but one night is not going to do it. refrigerating butter is a relatively new concept. before refrigeration butter was left out at room temp all the time.

I leave my butter out all the time so it's spreadable. In 20 years or so, it's never gone bad.

If it smells funny throw it out its cheaper than getting sick about putting your health on the line butter is supposed to be kept under a certain temperature If its out for one or two hours and its not too hot it might be ok but not any longer overnight its too risky

Butter shouldn't smell unless it has absorbed the odor of something else. For all things that need refrigeration best to keep them refrigerated. Just trash it.
