I know this has nothing to do with music, but...?

What the heck are the point for on here?!? I just found this site yesterday. I guess I've been out of the loop. lol! But I was just wondering about the points. Do I win something if I rack up a bunch of points? Or are they pretty much worthless?

Yes, you are new here. Oh, well, sometimes it is up to us old-timers to give the newbies the basics. Points tell what is encouraged (give a best answer and get ten points) and what is discouraged (it costs five points to ask a question), and you are penalized points for violations of Community Guidelines. But generally, the higher the level (by number of points, which are linked to your Q&A page on . . . eeeekkk!!! They've moved it! Where is it?

Anyway, go surfing for it. The list of what the levels mean may be temporarily out because they're changing it. Basically, you can ask and answer more questions per day, you get to use the thumbs up/down rating on other people's questions and answers, and so forth. Beyond a certain level, they just stop restrictions pretty much altogether. There may be some huge transactions per day figure like 100 votes for best answer or something, but a limit I have not reached since getting to maybe level 5.

There are no prizes, although a couple of people off the top of the leaderboard (ranked by points) have gotten jobs. Also, there was a big promo thing done in Manhattan, and I'm sure the people who were chosen for that all had a lot of points, but it wasn't the only factor in their being chosen. Mostly, it's for the natural sense of competition, along with trying to encourage people to give their best answer, not just play around.

The other thing is the reputation. If people get to know me here because they like my answer or question and click on my profile, and visit my 360 page, I may have another friend who will be in my corner when I need it, the way several of my 360 friends have been. And to whom I will send my announcements when I schedule the Grand Opening of my bookstore!

When you hit a million points, you win a night out on the town with George W. Bush, Jesus Christ, and Paris Hilton (the most talked about people in this forum). I recommend you get out while you still can...

but give me 10 pts first!

    :)

you get a point everytime you logg in, two points everytime you answer a question and 10 points if your answer gets picked as a best answer you lose 5 points when you ask a question and your points go up your level goes up and as your level goes up you get to answer more questions a day

    hope this helps

You move up levels as you gain points. The higher the level, the more questions you can ask, more votes you can cast, etc...
