Second life question?
If you play the game second life I have some questions. I've only been playing about a week, so be simple. When I log in I can stay on for about 5 min before it slows to the point that I can't do anything except log out. It happens everywhere not just in crowded areas. I have a brand new computer, which should be able to handle it but it's not. I think I need to adjust preferences but I truly don't know a thing about it. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

You most likely have the latest version of the software -- any time you logon and you have an outdated version, it usually forces you to download the update. So that is not an issue.
Second Life is very resource-intensive. I cannot run it and have another large piece of software loaded, for example. You want to go into your Graphics window (under Options? I do not remember right now) and turn down what you can to a lesser quality (like getting rid of Shadows, etc.) that will free up your system. Especially reduce the quality of the avatars appearances ; not doing this can slow down SL.
Another big issue is bandwidth. The speed of your internet connection and how much traffic your "area" of the 'net gets could slow you down. The faster a connection you have, the better Second Life will do. Some people do have had the lag issues; I see them but only occassionally (I use a cable modem, w/ Comcast).
The thing is that every time you go to a new place, SL has to download all the graphics and "objects" and any special code that is running to create effects (such as running water, butterfly generators, etc.) So the less you have to download, the better.
Third, look for some sort of "cache" option in SL, to see if you can set the size of how much space SL has to store stuff in without having to download again. Compare this to how much space you have left on your hard drive as well (use Windows Explorer). Increasing the cache size can help, since it gives SL more "room to play" -- but if Windows doesn't have enough space for its own cache, this would slow down the system. So you need to compare and "eyeball" it.
If you get stuck, go to http://forums.secondlife.com/ and check out what other users are suggesting. Good luck!
