Please tell me about the well-known pH. What's its scale, which end of it is acidic and which is alkaline?

Please explain it to a non-chemist.

    pH scale is like follows

    7 is the neutral point, it's not 5 like the first person said. and it is also the pH of pure water which is neutral

    as you decrease from 7, your solution gets acidic.

    pH 6.9 starts getting acidic. it is also the weakest acidic solution. as you progress towards one, the solution gets more and more acidic. a solution with pH 1 is a strong acid and it is the pH of concentarated hydrochloric acid. therefore you will have more and more hyrogen ions (H+) available in the solution. note also that an acid is said to be a proton donor. a proton is a single hydrogen ion. this is why acids react quickly because they have a lot of H+ ions or protons.

    then as you increase from 7, your solution gets alkaline. at pH 7.1, the solution starts getting alkaline. also a solution with pH 7.1 is the weakest alkali. as you progress towards 13, the solution gets more alkaline. pH 13 for a solution means that the solution is a strong alkali. NaOH (sodium hydroxide) has pH 13. also an alkali contains OH- ions and its concentration increases with an increase in the alkalinity of the solution.

    when an acid and an alkali reacts together, they neutralise each other and water is produces. the H+ and OH- ions combine and form water molecules; H2O.

    pH is a scale from 0 to 14. It tells how acidic or alkaline a substance is. The lower the pH, the more acidic is the solution. The higher the pH, the more alkaline is the solution. Substances which are neither acidic (neutral) usually have a pH of 7. Acids have a pH less than 7. Alkalis have a ph greater than 7.

    In fact, pH is a measure of the concentration of protons (H+) in a solution. S.P.L. Sørensen introduced this concept in 1909. The p stands for the German potenz, meaning power or concentration, and the H for the hydrogen ion (H+).

    the pH scale is a measure of concentration of the H+ ion in a solution. The lower the pH, the more H+ ions it has, the more acidic it is. The greater the pH, the less H+ ions it has, the less acidic it is.

    The pH scale is a logarithmic scale.

    The trick to understanding it is to realize that the total concentration of H+ ions times the total concentration of OH-

    ions in water is pretty much constant (10exp-14 Moles/Litre). As an example, pure distilled water has equal concentrations of H+ and OH-, both are 10exp-7 Moles/Litre. Therefore

    [H+]*[OH-]=10exp-7*10exp-7=

    =10exp-14.

    In this case, the pH = -log([H+]) =

    = -log(10exp-7) = 7.

    The solution is said to be neutral (neither basic nor acidic) because the concentration of both ions are the same.

    When you say, for example that the pH is 2, that means

    [H+] = 10exp-2 and therefore [OH-] = 10exp-12 (multiply both together and you get 10exp-14).

    This means there are 10000000000 H+ for every 1 OH-, therefore, the solution is very acidic.

    In the other hand if the pH is 12, that means [H+] is 10exp-12 and [OH-] is 10exp-2 (again, multiply both together and you get 10exp-14).

    This means there are 10000000000 OH- for every 1 H+, therefore, the solution is very basic.

    Just an aside, notice that a solution with a pH of, for example, 4, has 10 times more H+ ions than a solution with pH of 5. Every time you move up the pH scale by one, the concentration of H+ ions, decreases by a factor of 10.

    Basically its a scale ranging from 0 to 14. From 0 to 6 is acidic. 0 to 2 represent Strong acids while 3 to 6 represent Weak acids. PH 7 is neautral. Substances like water which are not highly reactive have a PH of 7. From 8 to 14 is alkalinic. PH 8 to 11 are Weak alkalines and from PH 12 to 14 are Strong alkalines.

    The pH scale goes from 0 to 14. 7 is neutral. Below 7 is acidic and above 7 is alkaline. Its determined by calculating the concentration of Hydrogen ions in a solution and then taking the negative log of that value.

    pH stands for "potential hydrogen ions" in a solution. Typically, the scale goes from 1 to 14. 7 is neutral and the pH of pure water. Any pH below 7 is acidic, and any pH above 7 is basic (alkaline). The formula for water is H2O, which means there are 2 hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom in each molecule. Water is neutral because it is an exact balance of hydrogen ions (H+) and hydroxyl ions (OH-) in solution. An acid is defined as a solution which donates hydrogen ions, and a base accepts hydrogen ions. This means that an acidic solution has a low pH and a lot of hydrogen ions. An alkaline solution has a high pH and fewer hydrogen ions.

    Mathmatically, pH is calculated as the -log of the hydrogen ion concentration. This is why a high hydrogen ion concentration results in a low pH and vice versa.

    RE: Is Cranberry Juice alkaline (basic) on the pH scale? It turns urine acidic!? I am confused. I was reading up on pH scales and alkaline and acid substances. I know that cranberries... as a fruit are very acidic and as far as I know they turn your urine alkaline. I know that if you consume... for example: lots of Soda... the pH in your urine will become very alkaline...

    The pH scale goes from 0 to 14. 7 is neutral (pure water would be 7). Anything below 7 is acidic, like your lemon juice for example, and anything above 7 is basic, like ammonium. It is determined by the amount of Hydrogen (H) or Hydroxide (OH) atoms in a substance.

    pH scale start with the reading 1 and end with 14,, from 1 up to 7 your substance is acid and from 7 up to 14 your substance is alkaline , strong acid will have low numbers so any acid with pH 2 stronger than 3 up to 7and for alkaline any high number means strong alkaline ,, any substance has the value 7 called neutral
