The situation / difference can be viewed as below:

Bachelors degree gives you entry into a colony

Masters degree gives you entry into a particular building

Doctoral degree gives you entry into a specific apartment!!!

    Hope you got it!

Basically, a master's degree means you have studied more in depth in a subject than a bachelors degree. A doctorate means you have studied more in depth than a masters and that you have contributed to the progress of the field.

To the degree holder, there is a better understanding of the subject, more tools, etc. In some disciplines, undergrads are taught a macroscopic analysis. They can look at the big picture and do pretty well with it. At the graduate level, they learn microscopic analysis. In this case we learn how to analyze the very small parts of the picture, then put them together to reconstruct the big picture, with more understanding.

Economically, a master's degree is generally worth more than a bachelorate. A doctorate generally does not pay for itself (because of the time needed to get it and the small difference in salary).

In the field, a doctorate can generally solve problems that a bachelorate simply cannot address, or can do only with great difficulty. Often times, someone with an advanced degree can see and solve issues that the folks with the lower degrees miss entirely.

As far as recognition, in the US, forget it. A non medical doctor is often not recognized as a doctor out of the academe. In other countries, that is not so true and the additional education is grounds for additional respect.

Degrees indicate the level of study in a particular field.

The baccalaureate degree is the first level of undergraduate study which is followed by a more detailed study that results in the Master's degree.

A person who received a doctorate has focused on a specific area, written a dissertation and has been reviewed by peers in the area who attest to the recipients expertise in the area.

Those who hold terminal degrees in a particular area usually respect others with the same training and view all others with a condescending attitude. This is not always the case, but it is more a rule rather than the exception.

However, some areas of endeavor do not require terminal degrees but do require considerable training. A plumber does not need a doctorate but he or she must be trained and licensed. They are experts in their area. The same could be said for electricians and others with specialty training.

The respect for the training is not mutual. The man with the doctorate still feels his degree is superior to the plumber's skill, although he can't repair a leaky pipe.

The value of the degree seems to be in the mind of the holder.

A high school diploma means you have a basic understanding of general education. You might be smart, but you do not have advanced problem solving techniques.

A Bachelor's assess your ability to solve "closed-ended" problems. The higher your GPA, the better your ability. A closed ended problem is nothing more than a clearly defined problem with a discrete answer, something like "Solve this equation..." or "write an essay comparing and contrasting European economy before and after the Black Plague". A high GPA from a good college means you're very good at learning material and applying it to solve defined problems.

A Masters generally assess your ability to solve "open-ended" problems. These are problem statements that are not clearly defined. "Set up an experiment to determine if water is more viscous than fruit juice". "Develop a business model and plan based on the projected customer base for our product" The problem itself needs to be defined before it can be answered. Sometimes defining the problem makes all the difference between an impossible task and an easy one that yields useful information.

A PhD defines difficult open-ended problems and solves them to yield fundamental research, information that no one have ever understood before. Mathematicians will make headway into new mathematical techniques or develop unknown relationships. Psychologists may perform a brand new study that challenges perceived understandings, leading to new insights. Advanced PhD candidates do not learn in the traditional sense - they read all the available state-of-the-art research in order to help them develop their own problem statements which will eventually lead to new understandings.

Pay is not equal to level of education. High school diplomas are general unskilled labor. However, get a dangerous job with a good union and you could be making 6 figures easily.

Bachelors tend to do all right, but they're the most frustrated. They're the ones that spend 40 years in a cubical, getting their 3.5% raises each year.

Masters degrees tend to have a better chance at leadership positions. The best candidates tend to have 2 or more Masters, for example in engineering and business administration. Management tends to make the most money.

PhD are researchers. Their love is defining new problems and understanding new things, not money. They are employed in think tanks, universities, government labs, etc. While they can make 6 figures, many do not; and almost none will reach the incomes of an average MBA or lawyer.

After high school, you go to college/university to get your Bachelor degree (usually in 4-years).

The next step is to go to graduate School, to get your Master degree (usually in 2-3 years).

Then you apply for your Doctorate degree after your Master degree. The time period for Doctorate degree may vary depending on your thesis. But in average it takes anywhere from 3-5 years.

Note that there is certain percentage of people that after their Bachelor degree can be accepted to Doctorate degree directly, hence skipping Master program. This usually is possible for those with high GPA on their Bachelor degree.
