why are synthetic fibre t-shirts so expensive? Why do people buy them?

I run a few times a week. I bike. I use cotton t-shirts most of the time. I've wanted to try synthetic ones because they're marketed so heavily. First thing was sticker shock, they're easily 3-4 times more expensive. Then I noticed that while they didn't get wet (of course, they're plastic) they weren't comfortable to wear. And the minute you stop running you start smelling horrible which does not happen with cotton. So overall cotton winds hands down for me.

So, why are so many people happy to buy those branded, very expensive, synthetic fibre t-shirts, despite all the problems?

Update:

is it just the brand? But even then, the "plastic" version of a Nike or Adidas shirt will easily cost 2 to 3 times more than a cotton shirt by the same? Why?

They keep you dry so you do not get too cold. However, I agree with you. I think it's a keep up with the Joneses thing. Just like why on earth does a 10 year old need a cell phone? If you have to call your kids to find out where they are, you are not watching them close enough. Name brands, cell phones, cars nobody can afford, it's all to look good. I'm more of a feel good person myself. then again, I can't really say those people are really happy if it takes buying expensive things. That's my take on it.

I agree with you. They are O.K. for casual wear not anything active like jogging, etc.

Good old cotton can't be beat!
