"Here is how to use MSCONFIG on Windows 98, 98SE, ME, and XP ("but what about Windows 95, NT, or 2000?") to disable some of the unnecessary programs that automatically load on start-up.

    1. Go to Start > Run

    2. Type MSCONFIG in the "Open:" box and then either press enter on your keyboard or click on the OK button.

    3. This launches Microsoft's System Configuration Utility. Click on the Startup tab (the tab at the far right).

If you use Windows XP, you'll notice that the Microsoft System Configuration Utility screen looks a little different than the one in Windows 98, 98 SE, or ME. But it still works the same. Click on the Startup tab (the tab at the far right).

    4. This takes you to a page with a list of "startup items." Startup items are programs that are automatically loaded every time you turn on your computer. Some startup programs are absolutely necessary, others are simply a waste of RAM.

The only startup items you absolutely need are:

    ScanRegistry

    TaskMonitor

    SystemTray

    LoadPowerProfile

Your antivirus program (trust me, you won't have a hard time figuring out which one is your antivirus program. It is pretty obvious.)"

    Hope that helps!

First, get this utility (don't worry about the warnings, as anything removed will be backed up to undo if something goes crazy):

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Run it and it'll show you everything that loads up during boot.

From there you have an option to hunt down the programs to disable their loading upon boot; remove the programs if you don't need them anymore; or let HijackThis! remove them for you if there's no programming settings to do it for you.

Added benefit: you can see what programs that helped itself to your memory tray without permission (like malware); your boot order (use MS BootVis -- can be found at MajorGeeks.com too to optimize it's load order for faster boots); and any extensions that were added to your browser.

MSConfig disabling is only a temporary solution for debugging, it's not the way to remove all traces of system hogs.

FYI: Goto SysInternals.com and pick up Process Explorer and use it to replace the default Task Manager too. More process details at a glance to keep track of system resources better, too (harmless install).

These two items will help computer owners keep up with their computer; and for novices, offer better information to give to techs to diagnose computer problems.

Delete them out of your startup folder. Also go to the programs that have properties that can be changed and see if they have a place where you can click on or off.

Uninstall what you don't use or even turn off the programs within the settings of each program at startup.

You can delete them if you dont use them or just go to best buy and get a clean up for about $30 i think.

right click on blank part of task bar, click properties, start up and uncheck those programs you dont want to start automatically or you can go to run command type in MSCONFIG , go to start up tab and then uncheck programs you dont want to start automatically.

first go to start, then click run. type "msconfig", from here go to startup, then you can select all the programs that you want/don't want to run on start up.
