I was a sub in MN with the MPLS school district. It is not true of all districts, but in Minneapolis you have to hold a teaching license, or be enrolled in a program to obtain one. To become a sub I had to apply, and pay for a criminal background check. Once all that comes through, you are added to their sub "database" which allowed me to browse and accept assignments online.
I know certain school districts (I also used to teach in Columbia Heights) has "building subs." And those are full-time subs that are always present in the building. When they are not substituting classes they do hallway patrol or office work.
Their temporary subs were actually tems from Kelly Services.
So, if you have a specific district in mind, I would suggest going to that district office and inquiring what you need to work as a sub becuase it varies everywhere.

Make an application to the Board of Education in your locality. You may be able to sub at several different schools on different days.'

Go to the nearest school and ask. They will be happy to assist you in becoming a sub.
