Shower Thank Yous etiquette question?
Please let me know your opinion.
We are having a shower this weekend, and I am due in another 4 weeks. Would it be appropriate to send a combo thank you/baby announcement after the baby is born, or should I send thank you's right away, and an announcement another couple of weeks after that?
The announcements are going to be personalized, with a pic of the baby, and a hand-written note thanking for the shower gift. I think this would be more appreciated than a "run-of the mill" thank you, but what do you think?

3 AnswersOther - India1 decade agoWhat to make for dinner for an ethnically diverse group?
Some history: I am an American living in Taiwan. A better than average cook. I am going to host my boyfriend (a Taiwanese) his friend, and his girlfried for dinner (all Taiwanese.)
So the question:
Do I make something typically American? Maybe pasta, homemade pizza, bruschetta, etc?
Or, stick to Chinese food? Maybe dumplings, ma po tofu, hot and sour soup, etc? I am quite confident in my ability to cook Chinese food, so I am not worried about that.
Either way, I am going to bake an apple pie for dessert, as it is my specialty.
One more note: Taiwanese are notoriously picky eaters, so I am nervous about cooking something "American" because it may be percieved as weird.
What are your thoughts?
11 AnswersEntertaining1 decade agoHow to make the thin, sour and spicy sauce from Thailand?
There are actually two versions,
One that is very sour, with just thinly sliced peppers, and the other was a mix of several types of peppers, and was not so sour.
They were both served with almost everything in southern Thailand.
And fyi, I am not talking curry, peanut or any pre-made stuff here. These were homemade.
3 AnswersEthnic Cuisine1 decade agoCan I share a happy vegetarian experience?
My boyfriend (a non-veg) and I ate at a new vegetarian (vegan) buffet for dinner tonight (we live in Taiwan.) And I was astounded at how happy everybody was there. It is one of those places where there is only one dinner seating, and all the food is cooked at one time, so the restaurant was full to capacity. There were huge tables with huge families;grandparents and toddlers all walking around. But the thing that really astounded me was how HAPPY everyone was! Here in Taiwan, most restaurants are not social places. Customers sit over their bowls of beef-noodle or dumplings and rarely look up, converse or even smile.
Tonight was the most plesent dining experience I have had since moving here almost two years ago. And, I would be willing to bet that less than 50% of the people there would consider themselves "vegetarians" but Asians are just much more accostomed the rest of the world to eating meat-free meals. I think many parts of the world could learn something from this.
Thank
13 AnswersVegetarian & Vegan1 decade agoHelp! My dog can turn doorknobs?
And my bedroom door doesn't have a lock. When I am at work he goes in and takes out a pillow and sleeps on it.
I have tried using decoy pillows (and sleeping on them so they smell like me) but he only wants my real pillows.
He sometimes helps himself to items in my laundry basket too.
What should I do?

8 AnswersDogs1 decade agoEthical misgivings about neutering a dog?
I really believe it is showing human being's superiority over animals, when in fact, we are equal. Yet, I listened to all the "hype" and had my dog neutered yesterday. Now I feel guilty, like he is never going to be the same.
And,---how's this for karma? Right before I had to pick him up at the vet last night my motorcycle was stolen.
What do you think?

5 AnswersDogs1 decade agoWhen making soy milk, is there any harm in not simmering it long enough?
I know it is supposed to simmer for 20 minutes to remove the "beany" flavor, but what if it tastes fine after only 5 minutes?
Also- anyone have any creative ideas for okara?
And, if anyone is reading this, wondering how to make soy milk, search the web, and do it. It is easy, good and super cheap!
